The town of New London is a quiet and notably picutresque community of roughly 4,400 residents nestled in the rolling hills of the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee region, in west-central New Hampshire.  New London is the home of Colby-Sawyer College, a small, private, coeducational, liberal arts institution that focuses on undergraduate education, and it is located just twenty-five miles south of Dartmouth College, a prestigious Ivy League research university in nearby Hanover, an easy and worthwhile afternoon sidetrip up Interstate 89.

In addition to the Oak Room, New London has several tourist-friendly dining options. The Coach House Restaurant, located inside The Inn at Pleasant Lake, serves upscale, farm-to-table dinners with water views. For a more casual meal, locally popular Peter Christian’s Tavern, operating in New London since the 1970’s, delivers classic pub fare and hearty soups in a rustic, wood-paneled space on Main Street, while the Elms Restaurant at the New London Inn offers fresh American dishes in an accessible setting.

Things to do in and round New London

The town provides convenient access to outdoor attractions, including the ski slopes of Mount Sunapee, one of New Hampshire’s premier ski resorts, and the hiking trails of Winslow State Park on Mount Kearsarge. During the summer, visitors can attend live theatrical performances at the historic New London Barn Playhouse.

Another summertime option would be the
narrated afternoon sightseeing trip on the M.V. Mt. Sunapee II, or an evening buffet cruise aboard the M.V. Sunapee Lake Queen (pictured at left), both departing from the public docks in nearby Sunapee Harbor
