Lodging options center around three primary venues. The historic Omni Mount Washington Resort features a grand design and a full-service spa, with guests frequently praising its mountain views and veranda.

The Omni Bretton Arms Inn (the smaller, historic country-house style inn located just down the road on the same grounds) offers a historic country house atmosphere, with visitors regularly highlighting its quiet gardens and relaxing environment, and the Lodge at Bretton Woods (a more modest, motor-lodge style hotel option is located across the street).

The historic
Omni Mount Washington Hotel (READ OUR REVIEW HERE) is famous for the Bretton Woods Conference in July 1944, when it hosted the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference that completely reshaped the global economy for the post-World War II era, and its impact is still felt today.

Dining choices are conveniently located inside these properties. The 1902 Main Dining Room at the main resort serves regional American cuisine in a formal setting. For a casual meal,
Fabyan’s Station Restaurant, situated in a restored railway depot nearby, offers a family-friendly menu of burgers and barbecue.

Ski Bretton Woods

Bretton Woods is the home of notable landmarks suitable for all travelers. The Mount Washington Cog Railway, at left, above, provides a historic train ride up the mountain, an activity that appeals to both children and adults.

For skiers, the
Bretton Woods Ski Area, New Hampshire’s largest, offers winter skiing and summer canopy tours, providing appropriate trail options, largely intermediate, for different skill levels.

While shoppers will find limited retail in the immediate valley, local artisan shops provide regional goods, making the area a balanced choice for relaxation and moderate activity.

The
Mount Washington Auto Road, open from mid- to late-May until mid-October, is America’s oldest continuously operating man-made tourist attraction. Opened in 1861, this 7.6-mile mountain road climbs from the base in Pinkham Notch (just a short drive from Bretton Woods) to the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington. It offers a spectacular, above-tree-line driving experience with panoramic views of the White Mountains, though its operations are entirely dictated by the region’s notoriously extreme weather.

In winter,
SnowCoaches leave the base of the Auto Road at Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center and climb about two thirds of the way to the summit of Mt. Washington via the Auto Road, gaining over 3,000 feet in elevation.   At times views can be breathtaking.

Finally, one of New Hampshire’s truly unique tourism options:
Mount Washington Observatory Summit Overnights.

Visit New Hampshire’s editors have not tried this yet, but weather aficionados can experience the ultimate winter adventure by spending an unforgettable night at the summit of Mount Washington (picutred at left), where they can witness breathtaking, snow-covered vistas above the clouds.

This unique program offers extreme-weather enthusiasts a comfortable, expert-guided sanctuary amidst some of the world’s most spectacular and legendary alpine conditions.
