Portsmouth offers a number of family-friendly attractions that make it an near-perfect destination for families with young children beginning, of course, with Strawbery Banke (pictured at top left in the column below), a 10-acre living history museum featuring meticulously preserved buildings from the 17th century, and any visitor with enough time to do so, should not overlook the opportunity to take a cruise to the beautiful Isles of Shoals, either from downtown Portsmouth on the M/V Thomas Laighton, pictured at top right below, or on the M/V Uncle Oscar from Rye Harbor. 

In summer, every family with children will want to consider a visit to the Water Country water park, New England’s largest, which spans 26 acres and provides thrilling water slides and attractions for children and teenagers,  and the Seacoast Science Center a short, scenic drive to adjacent Rye, which offers interactive learning experiences where kids can explore marine life, touch tanks, and engage with multiple educational exhibits.  

Visit New Hampshire highly recommends  a visit to the USS Albacore Museum that provides a fascinating, on-board tour of a submarine that was built at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and was once the fastest and most maneuverable submarine in the world.
